The Grand Island Harbor Rear Range Lighthouse, located near Munising Township, Michigan, was first established in 1868 as part of a pair of range lights to guide mariners into the harbor. The original rear range light was a wooden structure with a sixth-order Fresnel lens.
By 1914, the wooden structures had deteriorated and were replaced with steel-framed towers. The current rear range light is a 64-foot conical steel tower, painted black and white, and sits on a concrete foundation. It was automated in 1914 and deactivated in 1969. The lighthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is sometimes referred to as the Bay Furnace Rear Range Light.
